Summer Break

Hello there!

Yes, I'm still here although you couldn't guess that with all the silence that I've been keeping! ;)

I have decided to take off August so I can built the Fall/Winter collection without any distractions. Yes, I'm easily distracted with all the awsome things that I find!

So, I'll mantain this silent presence for a couple more weeks.

I'll be back in September with all the new books!

Have a great summer!

Bad news

The Crafts & Design no Jardim da Estrela is indefinably interrupted.

This event where ceramic, design, photography, jewelry, fashion, illustration and so many more crafts and arts could be seen, appreciated and bought has been interrupted. The organization Arquitexturas® - Organização de Eventosmade the announcement last Sunday.

The email sent says that the event has lost the support of  Junta de Freguesia da Lapa and as such, would be subjected to the same rules and procedures as a Municipal Fair that the organization feels is against all they always defended, considering that is restrictive of the artistic work of the participants.

They say that they are making efforts to bring back the event to Jardim da Estrela but there are no guarantees as to a date.

When this kind of thing happens we can see that we have a long way to go until the contemporary crafts and design are seen has something important. This fair had a different approach, they recognized the part design plays in the contemporary crafts and permitted the public to see and buy something different.

We can't continue to disregard Contemporary Crafts in Portugal. It's part of a necessary evolution. Contemporary Crafts, as I see them, don't ignore tradition, there base is traditional crafts but evolve in concept, design and materials.

It's a sad day when a project like this is stopped. I've seen so many projects disappear that I question what we want as a Society. Don't we want different products? Don't we want to buy something thought, design and crafted in Portugal? Is handmade not appreciated?

I hope, as I develop my own project, that there are some that appreciate what I'm doing, that see value in the time, effort and design behind it. I believe that Contemporary Crafts have a space in Portugal and that they are necessary to develop a Contemporary Portuguese Identity.

What are you're thoughts about this? Are we doomed or is there hope for the Contemporary Crafts movement in Portugal?
